One Piece of Advice All Mothers Need to Take

Too often, women come into my office absolutely worn down and world weary from the many hats they wear. They take care of their kids, clean house, wash clothes, struggle to keep the romance alive in their relationships, go to work, go to the store, cart kids to practices and games...you name it, it falls under the jurisdiction of "Mother."

But I think we're all familiar with the flight attendant spiel about the air masks, right? In the case of an emergency, if the air pressure of the cabin changes, oxygen masks will drop down from the ceiling. Flight attendants instruct everyone to secure your own mask first, and then go about helping secure the masks of others, including your children.

This goes against the very grain of motherhood, doesn't it? We never put ourselves above our children. They come first. Our inner mother hen has to coddle and our inner mother beat has to protect. These are natural urges God gave us.

But for this to be the case 100% of the time---that will for sure land you in a therapist's office or an early grave. Your ability to function lowers the more stressed and anxious you get, and eventually your family will operate with a mom whose heart of gold outweighs her leaden feet.

Moms, listen up! You've got to take care of yourself so that you can be healthy, productive member of your family. Pour some TLC into your pitcher so that you can better pour care into the cups of those around you.

Take 5 minutes to time-out from your shopping lists, car pools, play dates, and ironing. Close your eyes, focus on your breathing. Listen to a little music if that helps...and whatever you do, don't feel guilty.

YOU DESERVE IT.

Happy Mother's Day to all you moms out there!
